Canadian blogger and cookbook author Angela chats to us about her food philosophy, favourite healthy recipes and her personal goals for the future
After deciding that food and blogging was her passion, Angela started ‘Oh She Glows’ simply as a creative outlet. With its success, she dedicated her energy to the project and it is now an award-winning blog with over one million followers. She released her first cookbook in 2014, and the second, ‘Oh She Glows Every Day’ is due for release soon. Aged 33, she lives in Ontario in Canada and is expecting her second child.
Your blog ‘Oh She Glows’ has been so popular. What made you decide to start it back in 2008?
I started the blog with hopes of talking about food and my recovery from an eating disorder. Before long, I had connected with other women and men from all over the world. It ended up being therapeutic and healing to talk about my almost 15-year-long battle with food and weight because for the first time I realised I wasn’t alone. As my relationship with food improved, I narrowed my focus on creating healthy, plant-based recipes. ‘Oh She Glows’ is a celebration of my renewed zest for life and the good food I enjoy along the way.
What is your food philosophy?
I thrive on a diet made up of whole, plant-based foods that are minimally processed and organically grown whenever possible. I still make room for dessert and believe a balanced diet makes room for indulgences like chocolate or sweet treats. I no longer use a label to define my diet or lifestyle, but I continue to enjoy eating a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts, seeds, legumes, gluten-free whole grains, healthy fats and unrefined sugars in my diet. I always encourage people to do what works best for them personally.
What is your favourite appliance to use and why?
My Vitamix 5200 is easily the most used appliance in the kitchen! We make a few smoothies a day in it, and I’m always testing other recipes with it, too. It’s great for blending smoothies to be silky and smooth (ingredients like kale, dates and hemp hearts are no problem), as well as creamy sauces, Gazpacho, hummus and much more.
What is your kitchen at home like?
We renovated our kitchen back in 2014 so it’s currently my favourite room in the house. We put in a big island, so you can often find me there with my laptop and iPad testing out new recipes.
Your first cookbook is packed full of inspirational vegan recipes. What can we expect from your upcoming second book?
‘Oh She Glows Every Day’ is filled with more than 100 family friendly recipes everyone will love, such as Oh Em Gee Veggie Burgers, Fusilli Lentil-Mushroom Bolognese and Ultimate Flourless Brownies. All of the recipes are plantbased and most are gluten-free. It also includes useful information on essential pantry ingredients and tips on making recipes child, allergy and freezer-friendly.
What personal goals are you hoping to fulfill this year?
One of my personal goals is to have a healthy, active and happy pregnancy as we’ll be welcoming our second little one this September. Another goal on a business level is to continue growing our new recipe app and making it bigger, better and even more helpful for healthy home cooks.
